Action needed to improve

safety on Woy Woy Road

Everyone knows how notorious Woy Woy Road is for accidents, and following a recent horrific car accident, Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid, and State Member for Gosford, Liesl Tesch, are calling for action to address safety issues and driver behaviour on this local road.

CENTRAL COAST locals are all too familiar with the dangers of Woy Woy Road, Woy Woy. A known black spot, Woy Woy Road is a busy community route, particularly for the many Coasties who travel to Sydney and Newcastle each day from the Peninsula and surrounding suburbs.

A Regional Road under the responsibility of Central Coast Council, Woy Woy Road has seen significant safety upgrades over the past decade. This includes safety signage, changed speed limits to weather conditions, cats-eyes, road quality improvements and safety barrier upgrades.

Dr Reid and Ms Tesch have echoed community’s calls for increased focus on driver behaviour on this road, calling for the investigation of the installation of a speed camera at known speeding locations.

Dr Gordon Reid said that Woy Woy Road is a key transport connection for commuters travelling to Sydney or Newcastle via the M1 and during periods of wet weather, and due to its design, conditions along Woy Woy Road become unsafe for motorists.

"Recently, we saw again why Woy Woy Road is dangerous when these conditions affect the region," Dr Reid said. "“As an emergency department doctor, I have seen firsthand the impact car accidents have on families and their loved ones."

The recent car accident was believed to have been caused when a truck, going down the Woy Way Road hill, veered onto the wrong side of the road, striking the vehicle, driven by Danielle Walker, which was travelling up the hill.

Police are investigating the accident but Mrs Walker has no memory of what happened.

Dr Reid said, “My thoughts go to the Walker Family during this period, and I hope Danielle’s recovery is swift."

Paul Walker, husband to Danielle Walker, said: "“I do not want any person or family to go through what my wife and family are currently experiencing.

“Previously, there has been a speed camera positioned on Woy Woy Road which has prompted drivers to slow down.

“This is now the third accident to take place along this road in as little as three weeks.

“Everyone knows how notorious Woy Woy Road is for accidents, and something needs to be done.”

The road accident left thousands of commuters either stuck in traffic or having to find alternate routes to get to the M1, often along Brisbane Water Drive.

Recognising the significant impact of driver behaviour leading to accidents on this windy stretch of road, Liesl Tesch has written to NSW Minister for Regional Roads and Transport, Jenny Aitchison MP requesting that Transport for NSW investigate the installation of a speed enforcement camera on Woy Woy Road.

Ms Tesch has also requested that the notorious stretch of road, where the accident occurred, be considered for the ongoing trial of average speed cameras, reinforcing the importance of the need to ‘drive to survive’ in our community.

“While NSW Police regularly patrol this stretch, Police simply cannot be in all places at all times. Every road user has a role to play in ensuring that each time we use every road across our community, we get home safely,” Ms Tesch said.

“No family should ever receive the call that their loved one has been hurt on our roads. Working together across every level of our community, we can ensure that everyone gets home to their loved ones safely.”

During periods of wet weather, and due to its design, conditions along Woy Woy Road become unsafe for motorists. It is now urgent that local and state authorities conduct a review of measures to improve safety on Woy Woy Road.
