THE Tuggerah Lakes dredging program is expected to commence in early 2026, with planning and actions beginning in 2026. The funding will be used to dredge The Entrance channel and maintain the connection between the estuary and the ocean.
Member for The Entrance, David Mehan has written to the NSW Government to request Tuggerah Lakes be listed as one of the ‘key investment locations’ of the NSW Maritime Infrastructure Plan to enable regular dredging of the lake system to occur.
Brisbane Waters is already listed in the Plan, which supports regular dredging of navigation channels.
Tuggerah Lakes and The Entrance Channel has been dredged by Central Coast Council and state agencies in the past but there is no current dredging program of any note since Council disposed of its own dredge in 2020.
Development of a dredging program for Tuggerah lakes and The Entrance Channel was a key recommendation of the Tuggerah Lakes Expert Panel.
"Dredging of the lakes and The Entrance Channel will improve lake health and reduce flood risk," Mr Mehan said.
"Council has shown no commitment to the regular dredging of Tuggerah Lakes.
"I fear that without state intervention; the development of a viable and regular dredging program will not occur.
"I look forward to receiving the Governments response."
