HEALTH Department figures reveal 51.4 per cent of eligible women aged 50 to 74 years on the Central Coast are now overdue for a breast screen.

 

With October designated as Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Member for Gosford Liesl Tesch is urging women who are due for their breast screen to make a booking.

 

“My beautiful mum passed from breast cancer so this issue is very dear to my heart,” Ms Tesch said. “I urge all eligible women to please take advantage of this free service and get tested.

 

“I can’t stress how important early detection is; it may save your life and make a huge difference for your loved ones too.”

 

For women aged 50-74, a breast screen every two years is the best way to detect breast cancer early, before it can be seen or felt.”

 

A recent survey of more than 25,000 BreastScreen NSW clients found the overwhelming majority of women had a positive experience with the care and comfort received, rating their overall experience, from initial contact to receiving their results, as either good or very good.

 

The BreastScreen NSW “Be A Friend, Tell A Friend” campaign is also encouraging the community to have more conversations about the importance of regular screening, so more women across NSW book this potentially lifesaving appointment.

 

Breast cancer accounts for 28 per cent of all new cancer diagnosis in women in NSW and 15 per cent of the deaths of women from cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women and causes the second most deaths in women across NSW. Age and being female are the biggest risk factors, not a family history of breast cancer.
