Oysters tell a story

The Central Coast Marine Discovery Centre (CCMDC) will be holding a public talk on Saturday, 24 October 2026 that reveals the story that oysters tell about our waterways. Come along to hear about the science of our estuaries from researchers and local practitioners.

21 October 2026

“OYSTERS are more than a local delicacy. They are a window into the health of our waterways,” said Dr. Carla Sbrocchi, Moderator of the event

“This talk is the first in a new series showcasing marine research by Central Coast people, or carried out right here on the Coast. We’ll be hearing how water quality and a healthy ecosystem underpin a thriving local oyster industry.

Whether you are a researcher, someone working on the water, or simply curious about what lives in our estuaries, we’d love you to come along, listen and join the conversation.”

Speakers include:

  • Elliott Scanes, University of Technology, Sydney on the Oyster Microbiome and

  • Celeste Boonaerts from Bouddi Pearls and Oysters on How to Grow Oysters…with brief project updates from two research students, Luke Walker (University of Newcastle) and Brendon Rees (University of Technology, Sydney).
