Scams are a rising issue affecting millions of Australians every year, particularly older and more vulnerable people.

THE Federal Labor Government is focused on reducing the number of people that are targeted and affected by scams, whether it is online, over the phone, or in a letter.

To help fight against scams and raise awareness, the Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP, will host the Assistant Treasurer and Minister for Financial Services, Stephen Jones MP, at an anti-scams forum at Ocean Beach Surf Life Saving Club, Umina Beach.

Quotes attributable to Federal Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP:

“Last year, we were able to host a very successful anti-scams forum at Davistown RSL, alongside Minister Stephen Jones, that attracted over 200 people.

“The forum was highly informative, and attendees left with a range of strategies to reduce their likelihood of being targeted by a scam.

“Attendees were also provided with resources that they could use to identify, avoid, and report scams.

“I am pleased that since the Federal Labor Government established the National Anti-Scams Centre, there has been a dramatic decrease in the number of people being impacted by scams.

“The National Anti-Scam Centre’s second quarterly report has shown scam losses in October to December 2023 have almost halved compared to the same period in 2022.

“This is outstanding news which we need to continue to build upon.

“I encourage those interested in learning about strategies to identify and avoid scams to attend”, Dr Reid said.

The Peninsula Anti-Scams Forum will be held at Ocean Beach Surf Life Saving Club, Umina Beach, on Wednesday April 10 from 12pm – 3pm.
