FEDERAL Member for Robertson, Dr Gordon Reid MP says it was an amazing honour and privilege to represent Australia and present the national statement at the United Nations General Assembly.

“To have been asked to represent the Australian Government and people at the United Nations General Assembly was a great honour,” Dr Reid said.

The national statement provided an update on the federal government’s work to improve key outcomes for Indigenous people across Australia.

“I spoke about the federal government empowering First Nations’ communities through initiatives like the Indigenous Rangers Program and the need to improve health outcomes through targeted health programs that address the social determinants of health,” Dr Reid said.

“The statement also acknowledged the impacts climate change will have on First Nations communities and the importance of working with Indigenous people to successfully design and implement adaption and resilience measures.

“Delegates from across the world were interested in Australia’s First Nations policies and about our upcoming referendum to constitutionally recognise First Nations Australians and to establish an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament.

“The Albanese Labor Government has shown on countless occasions that it believes in and supports international cooperation and diplomacy.

“This experience has emphasised the incredible benefits that come from promoting dialogue between nations, and sharing ideas between First Nations communities.”
