NEWS THAT MATTERS
Weekday walkers trek onwards
The weekday Walkers have welcomed several new members during May and happily there were no weather related interruptions to the program.
Weekday Walkers on the Maitland Bay walk.
7 June 2023
THE Weekday Walkers first walk for May to Maitland Bay, and Mt. Bouddi Lookout was well attended, including several new faces. This was an easy to medium walk
with participants well rewarded by the great views from the track, particularly from the Mt. Bouddi vantage point.
The following week they boarded the train to Sydney, transferred to the light rail which delivered us to Marion Station for a very pleasant walk along Hawthorn Canal to Long Nose Point. From there they continued our walk through the streets of historic Balmain, to the wharf to catch the ferry to Circular Quay, to finally return home via train after a very pleasant day spent in congenial company.
The third walk was Kincumber Mountain Loop - a medium walk following Glasson's and Yannina Trails to Colin Watters Lookout. This was a well attended, lovely walk through a local bushland area. A bonus was unexpectedly meeting a former member, now living in retirement, as they were returning to their cars.
Time to board the train again.
This time heading north to alight at Hamilton for our walk along Throsby Creek to Newcastle Harbour. Many of the group were amazed by the changes to the harbour area, where construction continues apace adjacent to the public facilities along the foreshore. Following lunch some members continued out to Nobby's, while others caught the light rail to catch the train home. Again, a well attended outing for this easy walk.
Their final walk for the month was the medium to hard Wallarah Coastal Track. This was by far the most challenging walk for the month, resulting in a smaller number of participants. They met at the junction of Flowers Road and Mine Camp Road, near Catherine Hill Bay, from wherethey followed the Mine Camp Road to the historic camp, then continued on to arrive at Caves Beach in time for lunch at Stuart Chalmer's Park, before heading back to their starting point via the coastal, cliff top track with some challenging sections over steep, eroded areas of track.
The Weekday Walkers June program has started with the Mooney Mooney Cave, Quarry and Aboriginal carvings walk.
The remaining June program is Tumbi Umbi to Fountaindale, meeting at the corner of Old Chittaway Road and Fountain Road, Fountaindale, at 9.30, 13th
June. This is a medium, 8 kilometre walk. You are encouraged to bring lunch, morning tea and water, and to wear sturdy footwear.
The following week is Strickland Forest - an 11 kilometre medium walk. The final walk for June will be with the final the 10 kilometre medium walk at Popran National Park.
